Why I Gather Feathers

Magpies who speak from porches
where wind sways the willow
and blackbirds who ride a dance
on cattail and saw grass

I have seen lift dark wings
and leave behind where wind
masters matter, to override
the very dust we’re made of.

And in leaving have left me
this one fragment of their mastery
which I weave in my hair
to ride myths of the wind.
